Breakfast with Santa

Dear William,

Today Papa and YaYa took us to Breakfast with Santa at the Zoo!  It snowed a little last night, and the roads were terrible, but we braved the weather to get to the zoo.  Mommy dressed you up in a button down shirt and sweater vest.  You looked so handsome.  We also put a "Baby's First Christmas" Santa hat and bib on you.  Here are some pictures from the day:

You passed out before we left!

You didn't cry on Santa's lap!

4 Month Pictures

Dear William,

Here are the four month pictures that Mommy took with Grandma's assistance.  You have grown a lot since we took these, so Mommy and Daddy can't wait until next month!

Growth Spurt!

Dear William,

It is hard to find time to blog now that Mommy is back at work and we have all been sick!  Our normal routine consists of Mommy and Daddy waking up at 5am, getting ready, then getting you up at 5:45 to eat before we go to day care and work.  After work, you are usually hungry shortly after we get home, so we feed you and play for a while, then its bath time and bedtime!  Since Mommy has been sick, she pretty much goes to bed when you do, about 7:30 or 8pm.  And now Daddy is sick too!  Being sick is no fun at all.  Hopefully we will all feel better soon.  You seem a lot less congested, but are still sleeping in your swing, mainly because Mommy and Daddy don't feel well and don't want to chance you having a rough night.

We took you for your four month checkup on December 3rd.  At the appointment with Dr. Eaton, Mommy and Daddy asked about your continued congestion and he said you may have it off and on all winter.  That's also why we just keep you sleeping in the swing, since you are likely to get all stuffy again soon.  At your checkup, you weighed in at 14 lbs 5 oz and measured 24 1/2 inches long.  Your head circumference was 16 3/8 inches.  Mommy and Daddy thought that you were getting HUGE, but it turns you you are only in the 27th percentile for weight and the 22nd for height.  Your head has grown though, and you are now in the 49th percentile for head circumference.  Mommy and Daddy asked the doctor if your small size was any indication that you aren't going to be tall like Daddy, and he said no, you will probably grow at your own rate.  Daddy thinks we should call you "shorty."  Mommy and Daddy were surprised you weren't measuring bigger....

But you have since had a MASSIVE growth spurt, outgrown all the clothes you were in, and chunked out in a major way.  Your chubby cheeks are so cute!  You are now easily wearing six month sleepers, but not quite in the six month onesies, which sucks because the three month onesies are all too small.  You grew so fast, you passed up some of the clothes in the basement, which Mommy hadn't brought upstairs yet.  You skipped a whole size!  You feel much heavier, and appear to have grown at least an inch.  What a big boy you are!

During your growth spurt, you were getting really mad when you were hungry.  You would take down your normal six ounce bottle in record time and then be mad that there wasn't more.  So we upped your bottles to eight ounces and that made you happy.  You have been drinking four eight ounce bottles a day, and two to four ounces at bedtime.  That's a TON!  You also have been getting REALLY mad when Mommy and Daddy burp you in the middle of your bottle.  You tense up and scream at the top of your lungs.  We don't like to see you upset, but it is pretty funny, because you seem to think we are starving you, and you throw mini tantrums to get more food.  You have been grunting in excitement when you see your bottle. Your growth spurt seems to be over now, because you are eating a little less and not getting so mad when it is time to eat.

Let's see...some major developmental things you are doing are:
1. "Talking" non-stop.  You talk the most in morning and in the evening, but you have started squealing and changing your inflection.  You are going to be a talker, that's for sure.
2. Sticking your tongue out.  You have it out all the time, and blow with out, making the razz sound.
3. You have started grabbing EVERYTHING within your reach.  You love your keys, zebra car seat toy and your crinkle book.  You put everything in your mouth too!
4. You have discovered that you like your hands more than the pacifier.  You won't really take the pacifier and much prefer to suck and chew on your hands.  Your hands are getting chapped though, so Mommy and Daddy don't know what to do.
5. Mommy can make you laugh until you can't catch your breath.  It is HILARIOUS!  Here are a couple videos of you laughing:

We met with the Parents as Teachers lady again a couple weeks ago.  You are doing excellent still at gross motor skills and verbal.  She had you lay on your tummy and you lifted your head all the up and held it there and paid attention while she flipped through a board book with animals.  You are so smart and SOOOO cute!  Mommy and Daddy are so proud of you.  Lori introduced us to the terminology we should use as we teach you stuff.  "Care for yourself, Care for your family, Care for your home and Stick together."  We're supposed to use these statements when they apply in our daily lives.  The only thing Lori said to work on is teaching you your name.  Right now, you don't turn to us when we say your name, so Mommy and Daddy have been working on that.

The infant room at daycare has an account with an online photo website, so they share pictures of you with us.  Here are some pictures from your first day:

And here you are hanging out in the boppy with your friend Lincoln:

These pictures from day care make Mommy and Daddy so happy, to see you smile during the day!

Lastly, here is a picture of you with Grandma!

Thanksgiving

Dear William,

Your first Thanksgiving was not as exciting as Mommy and Daddy would have liked.  You had a fever, and Mommy had a very bad sore throat.  Thanksgiving was at Uncle Dave and Aunt Kristen's this year.  Cora made turkey name tags for everyone's plates out her hand print, and they were cute. We didn't stay long, and got there right before dinner and left right after dinner.  We needed rest.

On Friday we went to the doctor and got the A.O.K to travel to Chicago to see Babcia and Grandpa Fuerst.  Mommy was still very sick all weekend, but you loved spending time with Babcia.  You loved looking at her sparkly shirt and glasses.  You ended up sleeping in your swing in Mommy and Daddy's room, and you were very difficult to put to bed, mainly because you still weren't feeling good.  But after you were asleep you slept all night.  And you were cooperative once you woke up and played on your play mat independently while Mommy and Daddy slept more.  Then you took good naps, so Mommy was able to rest and start feeling better.  Daddy was up late both nights though trying to get you to fall asleep, so he was tired.  Daddy is a great Daddy!

Babcia made Thanksgiving Dinner for us on Friday night.  It was very yummy.  Uncle Jay and Kerry and Uncle Eric were there for dinner as well.  You had formula, not turkey!  The turkey was yummy though, and so was the stuffing.

Mommy did not take any pictures of Thanksgiving because she wasn't feeling well, so we'll have get lots of pictures at Christmas time.

The funniest part of the weekend was how much STUFF we had to take with us so that we had everything you needed!  Here is the list that mommy made of everything we needed to pack...

But that's not all...here's page 2...

Your "Fuerst" Fever

Dear William,

That's Mommy's favorite joke...Daddy things it's cheesy.  You think everything Mommy says is funny, so for now you think it is funny too!   It will be a sad day in Mommy's world when you finally realize that she is actually not funny.  Hopefully I have at least 10 years before that happens...am I being too optimistic?

Anyway, the real topic of this post is to tell you all about your first cold and fever.  For a couple weeks now you have been getting more and more stuffy.  In the morning you have the most impressive boogers that Mommy and Daddy have ever seen!  You are not really a fan of the "snot sucker" but unfortunately it has become a part of our morning routine.  Well, last Wednesday night, before Thanksgiving of course, you came down with a fever.  Mommy had been told that she would be able to tell without taking a temperature that you had a fever, and boy, could Mommy and Daddy tell.  It was like you were radiating heat.  Your temp was not too high, only 100.5, but the doctor's office says to call at 100.4, so we called and talked to a nurse on the exchange.  She said to give you Tylenol and that you should be able to make it through on that until we could take you to the doctor on Friday, since tomorrow was Thanksgiving.  (Mommy and Daddy have the worst luck with people and animals in our care getting sick on the holidays! First Abby, then Phoebe, now you!)  The nurse thought you might have an ear infection because you would not let us lay you down flat.  We were able to keep you comfortable all day on Thanksgiving.  Well, actually Daddy did most of the work because Mommy was sick too, with a HORRIBLE sore throat.  By Friday morning, your fever was gone, but we took you to the doctor just to make sure you did not have an ear infection, since you still wouldn't sleep on your back.  The doctor checked and you did not have an ear infection, so he said you were probably just congested and some kids don't like to lay flat when they are congested.  You have been sleeping in your swing every night since!  Hopefully you'll feel better soon and will be able to go back to your crib.  Mommy doesn't sleep as well with you in your swing.

Even though you are still stuffy, you are happy as can be.  You give so many smiles and make Mommy and Daddy smile too! You are very talkative.  In fact, Mommy and Daddy have been told that you are the most talkative in the newborn room at daycare!  You are rarely quiet, except when you are sleeping, and even then, you are still pretty noisy.

Let's see, you have been very gassy lately, and Mommy has discovered that one of your favorite words is "stinky."  You find it hilarious when asked "did you make a stinky!"  You have been faking Mommy and Daddy out a lot.  But, your favorite place is still the changing table, so I guess it all works out!  Your other favorite word is "cookie" mainly because Daddy sings the cookie monster song all the time and you like the voice he uses.  Mommy and Daddy think you are going to LOVE sesame street.

Speaking of TV...you are the only 4 month old baby we've ever heard of that focuses on the TV!  We can't even turn it on for 2 minutes without you zoning in.  The Parents as Teachers lady says babies don't watch TV, but we beg to differ.  Mommy and Daddy try to keep the TV off most of the time so that you don't become a couch potato!

Lastly, Mommy went through your clothes again and had to take several more onesies to the basement that you have outgrown.  It is a good thing Mommy went through them when she did, because you are almost out-growing the next size up!  You probably won't even be able to wear them until Christmas.  You are growing too fast, which is contrary to our minimal growth agreement, which you break every week!  Just kidding, it is fun to watch you grow, it is just going so fast.  Thank goodness Mommy and Daddy are recording it all on this blog, so we can remember it all!
We love you so much.

Love,
Mommy and Daddy
